Headway Technologies was founded in 1994 to provide advanced magneto resistive recording heads to the disk drive industry. Our initial focus was on the development of a different type of magneto resistive recording head known as Dual Stripe MR (DSMR). These products were used by Seagate in their industry leading server disk drives and by Toshiba in their high capacity mobile disk drives.
In 1997, the Company began development of soft adjacent layer magneto resistive heads in order to include industry standard products in its product offerings.
This was followed by the introduction of the Giant magneto resistive (GMR) head in 1999 into our product family. GMR technology was adopted by our industry as the first major recording density accelerator of the 21st century.
Following GMR, Headway continued to make significant marks on the recording industry’s technology growth curve: Tunneling Magneto Resistive reader introduction in 2004, Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) Writer in 2005, Tapered pole PMR writer in 2007, first two dimensional recording (2DMR) reader in 2017, and first spin torque (ST) assisted writer in 2021.
Headway has been a TDK group company since 2000. The combination of TDK, SAE and Headway remains the sole independent recording head company in the world.
